After only five months, he moved to the Institute of Postgraduate Medicine and Research (IPGMR), now Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BMU), having qualified through a competitive examination.

In January 1992, he passed Part I of the Fellowship of the College of Physicians and Surgeons (FCPS) examination and subsequently joined as a Clinical Assistant (CA) under Professor N. I. Khan. In 1993, he was promoted to Registrar under the same professor.

He obtained the FCPS in Internal Medicine in January 1995. Following this achievement, he served again as a Registrar at Dhaka Medical College (DMC). From 1998 to 2001, he held the positions of Resident Physician (Medicine) and Assistant Professor of Medicine at DMC.

In 2001, he left government service and joined Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), marking the beginning of a new phase in his academic and professional career.

During his fellowship training at the National University Hospital (NUH), Singapore, in 2003, he gained valuable clinical experience in interventional pulmonology, particularly transbronchial lung biopsy (TBLB), and received practical training in sleep clinics and sleep laboratory procedures. He also became familiar with the Computerised Patient Support System (CPSS), used for maintaining, organising and managing patient records in clinical practice.

Departmental Leadership and University Administration

In 2014, the MD (Pulmonology) postgraduate programme was introduced in the Respiratory Wing of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), marking an important milestone in the development of specialist training in respiratory medicine.

After years of sustained effort, the Respiratory Wing was transformed into a full-fledged Department of Respiratory Medicine in 2017. Prof. Dr. AKM Mosharraf Hossain became the founding Chairman of the newly established department. In this role, he contributed to the institutional development of respiratory medicine as an independent academic and clinical discipline, with a focus on specialist education, patient care and research.

In early 2021, he was appointed Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at BSMMU. In March 2021, he was further appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) for a three-year term. These appointments reflected his expanding responsibilities in medical education, academic administration and institutional leadership.
